Here’s a sample of some of our work. Please note, some of these projects were delivered by previous companies run by our partners.
Isle of Wight Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs)
Will and Martin have delivered three LCWIPs, covering Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood, Bembridge, Brading and St Helens; and the Bay Area. They also delivered community engagement and route selection and assessment work for the Newport and Ryde LCWIP. These plans have all now been adopted by the Isle of Wight Council and form part of the council’s suite of Supplementary Planning Documents.

Newport Pedestrian Audit
Martin delivered an audit of the pedestrian environment in the centre of Newport. He developed a methodology to assess each street for various criteria which affect the quality of the environment for people walking and produced a report with recommendations for ways to improve. He was subsequently asked to undertake some follow up work and produce some outline plans for location-specific improvements. The work has been integrated into the Newport Place Plan, and the report was formally adopted by the community council.
Newport Permeability Study
While preparing their 2017 Cycling Strategy for the Isle of Wight, CycleWight identified a need to better understand the degree to which streets in Newport were cyclable by people of various abilities. Martin co-developed a project with them to assess every street in the town, and went on to deliver the project for them. This involved a physical assessment of each street undertaken by bicycle and the creation of a scoring system to determine which streets were suitable for different types of user. In addition an assessment was made of other barriers to cycling such as physical barriers and one-way streets. The end result was a full report and digital map which is now being used to plan future projects to enable ordinary people to use a bike to get around the town.
Wootton Bridge & Whippingham Active Travel Audit
Commissioned by Wootton Bridge Parish Council, with Whippingham Parish Council brought on as a partner to increase the coverage and share costs, this project assessed the environment for walking and cycling in the parishes, uses the methodologies from the two Newport studies, but also introducing new electronic date collection techniques to speed data entry. The resultant report is being used to inform parish plans for the future.
Cargo Bike Feasibility Study & Trials
We undertook a study for the Isle of Wight Council looking at how electric cargo bikes could be introduced to the Island for commercial deliveries. This involved reviewing experience elsewhere in the UK and Europe and working with local businesses to assess the transferability of that experience to the Isle of Wight. This led on to two trails, delivered by Will partnering and Matt Whittaker (then director of People Powered CIC, now with Keert CIC), working in partnership with Isle of Wight Council and Wight Community Energy, which formed a successful proof of concept around a cargo bike delivery service operating in Cowes and Newport. This work lead to the formation of Keert CIC which continues to run commercial and community cargo bike delivery services Island-wide.

Paths for All Footpath Survey
As part of their “Paths for All” project Cyclewight commissioned as to deliver volunteer training and management along with data collection, analysis and presentation. This project assessed all Isle of Wight Footpaths to identify those that may be suitable for upgrade to allow cycling. We produced a survey methodology, trained 10 CycleWight volunteers, undertook a desktop study and produced survey maps for the volunteers. Volunteers then surveyed the paths identified as having potential and we built a comprehensive GIS map of the results and identify 10 potential pilot upgrade projects. Subsequently some of these routes have been upgrade to enable cycling.
Gunville Greenway
Research and production of a report for the Isle of Wight Council Rights of Way department to support a change of use of educational land to create a new walking and cycling route. The report was used to support a successful application to the Secretary of State for Education.
